ARTIST’S BREATH, 2021

To create a work of Art is to imbue it with something other, where the 1+1 makes 3. Here I took that translation literally by exhaling smoke through small canvases.

This gives the canvas a physical marking of my breath: of my existence, of the air that extends from me and dissipates into the world. A validation of concept and an irrefutable trace of the artist’s identity. An ironic play on the terms ‘hot air’ or ‘blow hard,’ referencing the value of words, in both what we speak and what we write.

All of the canvases are 4” x 4”, recalling the grid pattern of social media. The text has the intention of self-referential whimsy, recalling the meditative state when one is smoking alone.
